Ongoing Projects

  • Recyclemania
  • Maurer Meals
  • Halloween Recycled Costume Contest- held around lunch time on the Beach, with a panel of discerning judges, and prizes!
  • Trash Day- starting in 2006, SCC member and volunteers bring 48 hours worth of trash onto the campus green to pick out what could have been recycled. In 2006 35\% of the trash was recyclable materials!
  • End-of-Semester Salvage Program-SCC members help redirect items tossed out by students about to go on summer break
  • Environmental Education Using the Ed. Center- This is one of the SCC’s major efforts led by Grace Eason, with support from her US Green Building Council grant. Students are hired and trained to provide tours for UMF faculty, staff, and students as well as community members . Andrea Freed and Rebecca Berger’s elementary science and social science students developed grade specific pre and post lesson plans and activity booklets, and will conduct tours for elementary and middle school teachers and students. Andrea and Grace recently presented this project at the Maine Science Teachers Association Conference and will give a presentation at the Association for Science Teachers Education International Conference. Sarah Hardy developed assessment instruments to assess the effectiveness of the tours and the quality of activity booklets and brochures.
